                                                              About King Elementary School

King Elementary School is a Title 1 school-wide PreK-5 school located in downtown King, North Carolina. Our mascot is the Eagle and our school colors are red and black. At King Elementary we strive to put children first.

In order to meet children’s individual needs, we have personnel specializing in counseling, speech, academically gifted, and exceptional children. All students attend music, media and physical education once per week instructed by teachers certified in these areas. We also have two computer labs, and four classroom sets of laptops available for students’ use. The computers operate on a school-wide network which provides numerous technological opportunities, including wireless Internet access.  Each classroom is equipped with Smartboard technology.

In addition to classroom academics, opportunities available for students include Student Council, Safety Patrol, Soaring Eagles, Blue Flag Celebrations, and Accelerated Reader Celebrations.  Third, fourth, and fifth grade students participate in the STAR POINTS program.

Our Parent Teacher Organization is an integral part of our total school program. Each year the PTO sponsors our fall EagleFest and other fun-filled events for our students and the community.  In addition, the PTO provides volunteers for classroom activities, tutoring, and many other services. We believe educating children is a joint effort of home and school. We highly value and encourage parental involvement.

The faculty and staff at King Elementary School strive to provide a quality education for students. We are committed to making our school an exemplary school in every respect.

History King Elementary School (Portions taken from the 1947-1948 school yearbook, “King’s Cabin”)

Following the Revolutionary War a migratory spirit seemed to sweep the country.  Many veterans passed through Stokes County where some settled for a time, and then continued westward, while others remained here.

Among these who passed this way was a man by the name of Charles King, who built a little log cabin.  It was for this man and his cabin that the little town, now called King, was named “King’s Cabin.”  People continued to settle in around here and in 1887 the railroad which ran from Wilmington to Mount Airy reached King.  With the coming of the railroad, the town began to grow and eventually a small one-room log cabin school opened.  Wince Fulton was the first teacher.  In 1904, the school district known as Hardluck and Hustler were consolidated into the King School District and a new two-room frame building was erected.  In 1909, this two-room building was jacked up and two rooms put underneath the old rooms.  This was the year King High School was established with Professor Coggins as Principal.  This would be the first public high school in Stokes County.

King School continued to be a 1st through 12th grade school from 1909 through 1964 when South Stokes High School opened.  It was sometime during this timeframe that the school mascot was established as the eagle.  In the school year 1964-1965, King Elementary began as a 1st through 8th grade school.  In the school year 1974-1975, Kindergarten was added and King Elementary became a K-8 school for one year until Chestnut Grove Middle School opened in 1975.  The 1975-1976 school year saw King Elementary become a K-6 school.  Some of the older buildings were condemned at the beginning of the school year and some 6th grade students found themselves starting school at nearby Pinnacle Elementary briefly until mobile classrooms could be brought in.  The 1978-1979 school year was a transition year with the school being divided into two separate schools on the same campus (King Intermediate School for 4th-6th grades and King Primary School for grades K-3).  With the opening of the new King Intermediate School (now Mount Olive Elementary) in 1979-1980, King Primary School occupied the School Street campus serving King students in grades K-3.  The mascot became the Panda Bear in the mid to late 1980s.  In the 1992-1993 school year preschool began at King Primary and the school became a PK-3 school.  In 1995-1996, 3rd grade was moved to King Intermediate School and the King Primary School Pandas were students in grades PK-2 until 1997.  The current King Elementary School was established in 1997-1998 as a PK-5 school and once again the Eagle became the school mascot.
